As we continue to read our book club books, our focus this week is on the 'rising action' of the story mountain. Remember that "Rising action includes all of the plot point after the exposition and before the climax. Rising action is where characters and conflict are developed. There is no set length for rising action, rather, its length is determined by when the climax occurs" (from Writing Explained."
Your job this week is to identify the rising action of your story, in other words, what is the conflict/problem of the story so far. 1.) Identify the conflict/problem in your story so far. 2.) Use at least one quote to support your thinking (and page number) 3.) Include the author and title of your book. Example: There are many conflicts in the book, Because of Mr. Terupt, by Rob Buyea. Each character is dealing with his or her own issues. One of the problems for Jeffrey is that he hates school and has a difficult family life; his parents are depressed because they lost a child, and Jeffrey blames himself. For example, ADD QUOTE. This quote shows that Jeffrey carries a lot of guilt after losing Michael.

In the book Theodor boon by Rob Buyea the main problem is a character named Mr. Duffy who is in court because people are saying he murdered his wife. It says that on page 100 the security chief testified that Mr. Duffy car was at home when his wife got murdered. This quote shows Mr. Duffy has a chance of being guilty for the murder.

In the book school of fear by Gitty Daneshvari the problem is that all of the kids have to face their fear and leave their parents. I know this because on page 76 “nothing is going to happen to you parents.” And that's the problem of the story.

In the book Holes by Louis Sachar, the main problem is that all of the kids at Camp Greenlake have to dig holes because of the mistakes they made in their past. I know this because on page 24, Stanley was arrested for stealing Clive’s shoes so the judge said that he could either go to Camp Greenlake or to jail. He hadn’t gone to a jail before so he picked Camp Greenlake because the judge said, “There was an opening at Green Lake. Vacancies don’t last long at Camp Greenlake.” He had to dig holes everyday that he was there until he found something that was worth money.

In the book Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein, the main problem is Kyle and Akimi are trying to escape from Mr. Lemoncello's library. They will win the grand prize of a TV show and there faces on the game that there in. The hard part is they have people they have to beat. They kept trying to come up with ideas that didn't work. For example on pages 97 to 98, the author writes " Kyle checked his wrist watch. it was 1 pm. he and his teammates had wasted a hour on a lame window idea."

In the book Theodore Boone kid lawyer by John Grisham the main problem in the story is a murder that happened to Mrs.Duffy. It says "Mrs.Duffy was found dead in the living room." This quote shows that the main problem is the murder that happened to Mrs.Duffy.

In the book Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's library, by Chris Grabenstein there are many problems along the way but the main problem is Kyle Keeley gets locked in the library with 11 other people. But some people decided to leave. For example the kids start to leave after Mr. Lemoncello announces "Simple: Find your way out of the library only using what's in the library." page 84.

In the book School of Fear, by Gitty Daneshvari, the main problem is that four kids have extreme fears. Madeleine is afraid of insects, and especially spiders. Theo is afraid of dying. Lulu is afraid of confined spaces, like a small, cramped room without windows. Like an elevator. Garrison is afraid of deep water, or an sort of deep water. I know that this is the main problem in the story because on the back of the book it says... "Madeleine Masterson is deathly afraid of bugs, especially spiders. Theodore Bartholemew is petrified of dying. Lulu Punchalower is scared of confined spaces. Garrison Feldman is terrified o deep water." As you can see, the main problem in the book School of Fear, by Gitty Daneshvari, is that four kids have extreme fears.

In the book " HOLES" Written by Louis Sachar, there are many conflicts. Each character has the same conflict though. All of them are forced to work at Camp Green Lake. They are forced to dig holes the length of 5ft all day long in the burning desert. Their shovel is their measuring stick. I know this because in the book "Holes" by Louis Sachar, the author states "You are to dig one hole each day, including Saturdays and Sundays. Each hole must be 5ft deep, and 5ft across in every direction. Your shovel is your measuring stick." page 5 - 13. This quote shows that the campers at Camp Green Lakes conflict is that they are forced to work at Camp Green Lake.

In the book Holes by Louis Sachar, the main idea of the story is about boys who have made wrong decisions and have to go to court, and either go to jail or a camp where they are forced to dig holes all day. On page 25 the judge explained " it was either Camp Green Lake or jail." Stanley decided to go to Camp Green Lake over going to jail.

In the book schools of fear, The main problem is that the foursome have extreme fears commonly known as phobias. Madeliene Masterson is terribly afraid of insects. Theodore Bartholomew starts sweating at the mention of death. Lulu goes kookoo when in a small space and Garrison is out of his flow when it comes to large bodies of H2O.

The book I am reading is Holes by Louis Sachar. The rising action is about Zero running away because Mr. Pendanski said he was stupid. Then Zero ran away but didn't bring any water. Stanley went chasing after him the next day. Stanley found him under a boat and they are trying to find God's Thumb to get water. The problem is that they may die. "He looked at the shovel and couldn't help but think he might need to dig a grave. Zero's last hole. And who will dig a grave for me he thought" (P. 162)

There are four different problems in the story School of Fear, by Gitty Daneshvari. A problem for Madiline Masterson is that she is deathly afraid of bugs, especially spiders. She also calls the exterminator so much, that he go to a tropical vesort in bora bora. “If it wasn’t for Madeline, it was doubtful he would have been able to afford annual holidays to bora bora.” (pg. 10)

In the book School Of Fear by Gitty Daneshavari, the main problem is that there are four kids names Garrison, Who is afraid of water, Madeline is petrified of bugs, Lulu is horrified of confined spaces. and Theo is afraid of death. They can't overcome their fears so they go to School Of Fear, hidden under a mass of vines that block all the sunlight out. I know this because on page 71 it states, "A window and at least one hundred feet protecting Garrison from the water but it didn't matter. The unraveling was instantaneous."In the book School Of Fear by Gitty Daneshavari, the main problem is that there are four kids names Garrison, Who is afraid of water, Madeline is petrified of bugs, Lulu is horrified of confined spaces. and Theo is afraid of death. In the book Theodore Boone by John Grisham the main problem of the story is that their a murder and they don't no ho did the work of the murder. the person who was murdered name was Myra Duffy, the wife of Mr. Duffy. They think that Mr. Duffy did it. I know now this because in the prologue it says " There was something missing in the case and based on what had already bee said in court, Theo suspected that the mystery might never be solved. This supports why I think that the murder is the main problem in the story. It's Christmas time!!! YYYAAAYYY!!!

In the book, Escape from Mr Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein, the problem was solved when Andrew got kicked out of the library and when Charles got kicked out of the library. I know this because the text says "You are correct. For instance, Mr. Peckleman. He will be leaving right now." (pg 229) and "You're done, Charles. Dr. Zinchenko? Tell our departing guest what he has just won." (pg 273). This shows that Andrew and Charles both go eliminated from the game.
