This week, our focus is making connections. Students who make connections are better able to understand the text they are reading. It is important for you to use your schema (background knowledge) and experiences to connect with the text as it helps you become more engaged in the reading experience.
Here's your assignment this week: 1.) Make at least one connection to the book you are reading at home. 2.) Be sure to explain what is happening in the story and describe HOW you connect to it (text-to-self, text-to-text, or a text-to-world). 3.) Include the title and author in your response. Example: One connection I make to the book Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea, is the way students react to Alexia's bullying tendencies. Alexia can be so cruel to her classmates, it has to make you wonder if something else is going on at home. She constantly calls other people names and is always trying to start "girl wars." I connect with this because as a fifth grade student, I was on the receiving end of some very similar behaviors from my peers. Not only was I called names, but I watched the way the bullies treated other people as well. I hope Alexia's classmates learn how to stick up for themselves the way I did when I was about their age!

I am reading the book On The Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A connection that I made was when her siblings all fight and that is the exact same as mine! They can not figure who is going to do the work!

In the book Finding Gobi By Dion Leonard I have a text to self connection to when Gobi runs away from someone in china who was watching Gobi. That made me get a text to self connection because it reminded me of the time when my dog Baileys leash fell off and he went sprinting down the high line with another dog. My dad ran after him and I was incredibly scared.

At home I am reading the second book I Even Funnier by James Patterson. In the book, after waiting a long time Jamie Grim won the competition, making him able to go to nationals and win World’s Most Funny Kid. This is a text to world connection because kids in the real world could do this, they could tell jokes in competitions to get the most people laughing.

In the book Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, I made a text to self connection because in first grade we learned about World War Two and what happened with all of the Nazis. We wrote sentences on the board and we had to tell the teacher what was going on. We had to fill out this packet all about the war.

This book is about the story of Anna Marie and how she helps her friend who is a Jew. She was trying to hide her in her house. She was pretending that she was her sister. I thought about my sister and how I would protect her.

In the book The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart one connection I have is in the book the characters have to go through a bunch of tests and only four of them end up passing. They do these tests to make it to the secret society and do a bunch of top secret work for Mr. Benedict. I, in my life have had to take a bunch of tests to make a math class, sports teams, and later in my life I will have to take tests to make a school, like Stanford that I really want to go to. That is my one connection with the book I am reading at my house.

One connection I have with the book The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies is that Even and his little sister Jessie fought pretty much the whole book. My connection to that is that my Sister and I fight too. [Not about Lemonade though] This book is about a lemonade war and how it started is that Jessie skipped a grade and Evan though she would annoy him now that they are in the same 4th grade class. Evan's friend Scott came over to build a lemonade stand with him and Jessie wanted to help. Evan would not let her, so Jessie got angry and decided that night at dinner to have a lemonade war with Evan. they each made their own stand and who ever got to $100 first won and got to keep the other persons money. At the end of the book Evan went to Ryan's house to swim. Then when Scott was upstairs he stole all of Jesse's money and then Evan and Jesse pretty sure it was him and they discussed how their friendship was more important than money. Afterwards they watched fire works with their mom and then went to sleep.

In my book, Smile by Raina Telgemeier, I made a text to self connection. Raina has an over bite in the book and so do I! She had to get braces and I might have to too. It took her about 5 years to fix her mouth after that fall in the street. Wow! Hopefully that doesn't happen to me! That book is/was really good.

In the book " The Egypt Game" written by Zilpha Keatley Snyder, I made a text - to - world connection during the part where April has been attacked by some random man. I heard about someone on the news who had been attacked in a street much like April was attacked. The attacked happened when April and the other Egypt gang members were searching for Security, a lost stuffed toy. All of a sudden, Melanie heard someone screaming "Help!" And that is when it happened...

In the book Number of the Stars by Lois Lowry. I have a connection to the book because there is a Jewish family. I have a connection because I'm Jewish. The family in the book is in danger because they are Jewish. This book took place in World War 2. I feel scared for the Jewish family because the Nazis are suspicous of them being Jewish and the Nazis don't like Jewish people.

In the book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is about a treasure hunt with a lot of people hunting an 12 year old boy named James who is trying to find a treasure chest on the other side of a danger filled island. I made a text to self connection. In new New York, we did a treasure hunt in an apartment at my friends birthday party, and we were all shoving each other aside to look places that haven't been checked. I all ended when me and my friend lifted up the bag in triumph.

I am reading a book called The Hammer of Thor, by Rick Riordan. This book is the sequel of The Sword of Summer. It’s about Magnus Chase and, he needs to find the hammer of Thor because, if he doesn’t, Thor’s enemies will find it and then Thor will not be able to protect the worlds, and then giants invade and destroy them. I have a text-self connection with this book when, I couldn’t fall asleep without dream bear 2.0 or something, and I had to look around my apartment and I couldn’t fall asleep till 4 in the morning. That’s my connection to The Hammer of Thor.
