LeadsThis week, we will focus on writing leads. Leads are an important part of writing. A strong lead grabs readers' attention and makes them want to read more.
Here is your assignment this week: 1.) Read the lead to your book (the first sentence or paragraph of the book) 2.) Type the lead in your response 3.) Determine the type of lead (use the image below to help) 4.) Answer this question: Is the lead in your book effective (does it work)? Does it make you want to keep reading? Why? Why not? Be specific. Example: Wonder by RJ Palacio: "I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year old kid. I mean, sure I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go" (p.3). This lead from the book, Wonder, by RJ Palacio introduces a character. I know this because Palacio describes the main character, Auggie in the first paragraph. I do think this is an effective lead because it makes me want to learn more about the kid who "makes other ordinary kids run away screaming."

The book I'm reading Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo has a flash back lead. "This story begins with in the walls of a castle, with the birth of a mouse." This lead grabs my attention because it reminds me of a fairy tale. I like that reminds me of a fairy tale because fairy tales are magical.

I agree with you that Fairy tales are magical even though I don’t like fairy tales

“My hands were freezing from the choppy waves in the January Atlantic Ocean. We were miles out from Ocracoke Island of the North Carolina coast and I had on a pair of my dad’s old work gloves. My older brother Danny and I were there after school to do some net fishing and it was time to let out the drop net between our two boats.” This lead from the book Sink or Swim by Steve Watkins is a snapshot lead because I can see the choppy waves and feel her hands freezing. It made me think of when I was in Hawaii and there was a storm and it made the waves very choppy too. I think the lead was effective because it made me picture and feel what was going on.

The Bad Beginning,by Lemony Snicket:"If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better of reading some other book."(p.1). This lead from the book The Bad Beginning,by Lemony Snicket is a interesting comment. The lead in my book is not effective because the author is telling me not to read the book! I think this because who would write that at the beginning of a book?

The lead in MR. LEMONCELLO’S LIBRARY OLYMPICS is “Just about every kid in America wished they could be Kyle Keeley.” I think the type of lead is a interesting comment. The lead was super strong and it totally hooked me.

The lead for Wonder is....."I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year old kid. I mean, sure I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go." I think this lead will make other people want to read it. The part about kids running away screaming and getting stared at makes me read more because I want to know why people run away screaming. This lead is a interesting comment about a character.

In the book, the One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate the lead is " I am Ivan. I am a gorilla. It's not as easy as it looks. People call me the Freeway gorilla. The ape at exit 8.The one and only Ivan, mighty silverback." This lead is introducing a character. I know this because on the first page it says "I am Ivan." And it uses a name. And starts to introduce him and his personality. I think it is a good lead because when it says "It's not as easy as it looks." I want to know more about how he gets treated and what people have done to him and how his life story is.

In the book The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma, the lead is "In a city called Stonetown, on the third floor of an old, gray-stoned house, a boy named Reynie Muldoon was considering his options." I think this lead is a snapshot lead because it describes a scene and both introduces a character and a where. I think this is a good lead because it makes you want to read more and learn about the boy, the house, thee town, and what options the boy was considering. As you can see, the lead in The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoners Dilemma is a good one, and a snapshot lead. This lead sure made me want to read more.

“They stood four deep on the after deck of the Carpathia, chilled to the bone, staring out at nothing.Dark water, lights swells no evidence that barley 7hours before, the largest and most magnificent ship the world had ever seen had sailed here in all her glory.” This lead from the book titanic by Gordon Korman this quote shows a snapshot because on page1. Its gives lots of detail that I can picture. Like when I saw a documentary of the titanic. I think this an effective lead because I want to now more about what the Titanic looked like.

I’m reading a book called The Red Pyramid, by Rick Riordan. This is the lead to the book. “We only have a few hours, so listen carefully. If your hearing this story, your already in danger. Sadie and I might be your only chance.” I think this is the introducing a character lead. This is because it says in the lead, someone named Sadie might be the readers only chance. I think this is an insanely good lead. This is because, 1, it’s not just talking about characters in the book, it’s talking about the reader too. 2, it makes you want to know, why this person and Sadie might be our only chance. And 3, it makes you want to know why they only have a few hours to right this. That’s why I think this is a good lead.

In the book White Fang written by Jack London, one of the leads that hooked me when I looked on the back cover was, "So the gray cub knew fear, though he knew not eh stuff of which fear was made". This really hooked me because, I read a little bit in and saw that he was the only cub of the litter that survived and took after his father.

In the book WONDER the lead is..........." I know I'm not an ordinary ten~ year old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream . I ride my bike. I play ball . I have an XBox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in play grounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at where ever they go." Page 3. I think this lead would be effective WONDER because they would wonder why "ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds." page 3. This book is an interesting comment because it tells interesting comments about Auggie .
