Compare or Contrast Characters
An important skill in reading and writing is the ability to compare and contrast characters. If you're able to demonstrate the similarities and/or differences between two people from your story, then you're showing a strong understanding of the text. Your assignment this week is to compare and contrast two characters from the book you are reading at home. 1.) Choose two characters from the book you are reading at home. 2.) Write a compare and contrast essay demonstrating the similarities and differences between these two characters. 3.) Use transition words such as "On the other hand..." or "Similarly..." (see the image below). 5.) Include the author and title For example: Two fifth graders with seemingly nothing in common. One who loves school, one who despises it. One who escapes life's problems through books, the other who can't stand reading. Despite their differences, Jessica and Jeffrey, two characters from the book, Because of Mr. Terupt, by Rob Buyea, also find common ground through their fifth grade experiences at Snow Hill School. Jessica and Jeffrey have many similarities and differences. Jessica and Jeffrey may seem like total opposites, but they actually have quite a few things in common! Both attend Snow Hill Tree Elementary School and share their beloved teacher, Mr. Terupt. We don't realize it at first, but they are both compassionate and kind kids. Jessica demonstrates her compassion when she defends her friends from the bully, Lexie. Jeffrey shows his kindness with students from the collaborate classroom. Both characters also demonstrate a great deal of strength. Jessica's parents are recently divorced and she moved to a new school. Even though she's new, she finds the strength to make friends and face her difficult family situation. Similarly, Jeffrey struggles with his family as well. He lost his brother to cancer and shows grit and courage in dealing with these difficult situations. Jessica and Jeffrey are also quite different. Jessica loves to read and appreciates school and learning. She often connects to the characters in her books, "I was finishing the book Belle Teal. I loved Belle. I wanted her to be my friend" (p.38). On the other hand, Jeffrey's attitude is not as positive. He doesn't like school and dislikes most of his teachers and assignments: "I'm no good in school. School stinks" (p. 15). Clearly, these two characters are very different, though in the end of the book, they all find a commonality--loving Mr. Terupt. Two different students with challenging family situations find common ground in Because of Mr. Terupt. From kindness and courage to very different backgrounds, clearly Jessica and Jeffrey have many similarities and differences.

You have to indent and you have to capitalize the c in conclusion because you are starting new paragraph. Always indent when starting a Paragraph, and when doing more Paragraphs.

Two boys destined for greatness each in their own unique path. Dribbling around, above, and through one man plunges the rocketing soccer ball into the threads of the net as the announcer hollers ”That’s another one for Jabber Morris!” Jabber slides across the grass giving his favorite celebratory dance. But over on the football field a bullet with pads on darts through the defensive line like a shark would to water. Protecting the precious oval pigskin football, he cradles it into the decorated endzone. A person with a striped shirt almost like a robber puts both hands up with a 90 degree angle at the elbow. “Touchdown Pete Morris!” These two brothers have many things in common and many things of the opposite.

Who knew a boy and a girl had so much in common? In the book The Series of Unfortunate Events,by Lemony Snicket, Klaus and Violet do have some things in common and sometimes they don't. Violet and Klaus have many similarities and differences about each of them. They both have a sister named Sunny and they both have what they think is a horrible life.

Can you imagine two brothers, a five and ten year old, who have so many similarities yet at the same time have just as many differences? One who likes trouble and one who takes the blame. In the book Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing written by Judy Bloom, Peter and Fudge have multiple similarities and differences.

In the book WONDER, by R.J Palacio, August and Jack(Will) have many similarities and differences between them like August has a syndrome that impacts some of the bones in the scull and J.W doesn't.Also, J.W has when to school many times and on the other hand, August first year of school is 5th grade, ''Can you imagine someone at your school having the first year in 5th grade!?'' Third, August, as you can see he likes outer space while J.W likes sports a lot.I know this because at the beginning were August was about to go on a tour he look at his shoes and described them as heavy down.As you can see, there are many differences and similarities between them.

In the book, "One For the Murphy's" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, Carley's mom and Ms. Murphy are different and the same in many ways. Ms. Murphy bought Carley orange juice just because she wanted it. Her mother on the other hand would not and would say, "Who do you think you are, a Rockefeller?" Mrs. Murphy is also more calm and caring. Carley's mom is not as nice.Carley feels insecure that Mrs. Murphy is doing all of these nice, weird things that her mother never did. So she doesn't feel like she is home. They are alike because they both help Carley. They also both can be kind. They are also both her mom. Mrs Murphy is her foster mom and Carley's mom is her biological mom.
